The north visitor parking lot located next to the University of Iowa’s Mayflower Residence Hall on Dubuque Street will close on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at noon for continued work on the Iowa City Gateway Project. It will remain closed through 2017.

The lot will instead be used for the University of Iowa CAMBUS turnaround. CAMBUS is currently using the access road at Terrell Mill Park to turnaround, but this access road will close for crews to begin work to elevate the southbound lanes of Dubuque Street this spring.

To assist public parking needs, eight spaces in the rear parking lot were reclassified by Parking and Transportation as 1-hour parking spaces. The public parking spaces are located immediately after you enter the parking lot on the right-hand side. Temporary signage currently designates the parking spaces until meters can be installed.

Visitors are reminded that parking in the bus and fire lane are prohibited and are subject to ticket or tow. As a reminder, parking in permit spaces is prohibited and subject to ticket or tow. We appreciate your patience and cooperation while the north visitor parking lot is closed.

The Iowa City Gateway Project is a flood mitigation project that will elevate Dubuque Street while also raising and replacing the Park Road Bridge. To learn more, visit icgov.org/gatewayproject.

December 22, 2016

Traffic is expected to switch to the northbound lanes of Dubuque Street beginning Monday, December 19, 2016, weather pending.

The change is part of the Phase 2 traffic pattern for the ongoing Iowa City Gateway Project, a flood mitigation effort on Dubuque Street. Vehicles are expected to travel head-to-head in the northbound lanes for the duration of this phase of work. The shift will allow the contractor to begin work on the retaining wall near the river and the elevation of the southbound lanes.

With the Stage 2 change, access at Taft Speedway and Ridge Road will be closed due to restricted sight distances and turning movements in the head-to-head configuration. Brown Street and Kimball Road will also open either Tuesday, December 20 or Wednesday, December 21, weather depending.

Drivers are encouraged to proceed with caution through the construction zone and look for alternate routes when possible.

May 27, 2016

Weather permitting, beginning on Tuesday, May 31, 2016, construction will begin on the Iowa City Gateway Project, including Park Road and Dubuque Street.

It is anticipated that lane shifts will begin on Park Road beginning on Tuesday, May 31. Lane reductions are also expected on Dubuque Street beginning on Tuesday, May 31. During this time through vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Park Road and Dubuque Street will be maintained.

“Critical closures” lasting up to 10 days occasionally will be necessary on Dubuque Street over the course of construction which is expected to be completed summer of 2018. As specific traffic control changes or closures are anticipated, additional information and impacts will be provided for motorists, pedestrians, and CAMBUS riders.

When planning alternate routes, the UI reminds drivers of the construction on Hawkins Drive between Highway 6 and Finkbine Drive, which has narrowed the road to one lane in either direction. Construction on Hawkins Drive is expected to finish August 12, 2016.
