Highway 6 pedestrian bridge maintenance closures and pedestrian detours Sept. 8 – Oct. 25, 2020

Highway 6 pedestrian bridge maintenance closures and pedestrian detours Sept. 14 – Nov. 1, 2020

Sept. 9, 2020

The Highway 6 pedestrian bridge between Newton Road and UI College of Public Health requires maintenance and repairs to ensure the bridge meets safety and standard requirements. The maintenance work requires partial and complete closures of the bridge and will be completed in three phases beginning Tuesday, Sept. 8. The work is weather dependent and dates may change due to the impacts of weather.

During phrases 2 and 3, pedestrians may need to use the CAMBUS route, Hancher-Newton Road to travel between the two locations. If the temporary pedestrian detour and bus route detour are both inaccessible to a person, please contact the Parking and Transportation Department so they can help you determine temporary mobility options.

Phase 1 | Sept. 14 – 6 p.m. Oct. 4, 2020

Bridge and pedestrian paths remain open. The bridge will maintain controlled alternating walkways on the East and West sides of the bridge. Pedestrians are reminded to use extra caution when traveling near maintenance areas and to obey all posted signage.

Phase 2 | Oct. 5 – 3 a.m. Oct. 27, 2020

The ADA accessible ramp leading up to the bridge on the north side is closed during phase 2. The stairs and bridge overpass remain open.  In addition to fixed-route bus services listed below, CAMBUS also operates a door-to-door paratransit bus service, called "Bionic Bus".

Academic weekday transportation

Pedestrians may find the Hancher-Newton Road route meets their needs. Hancher-Newton Road operates weekdays from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Academic nights and weekend transportation

Pedestrians may find the Red Route and Blue Route meet their needs. Both routes operate weeknights from 7 p.m. to 12:40 a.m. Both routes operate on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:10 a.m. to 12:40 a.m.

Phase 3 | 6 p.m. Oct. 30 – 3 a.m. Nov. 1

The pedestrian bridge will be closed. All traffic by foot will be detoured. Pedestrians should see Phase 2 for information regarding CAMBUS routes that can assist with the detour.
