University of Iowa Parking and Transportation will join with public transportation systems nationwide to participate in Get On Board Day on Thursday, April 25.
Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2019 National Get On Board Day is a day that encourages people to support public transportation and showcases the benefits it brings to communities. Each weekday in the United States, 34 million people board public transportation. Additionally, public transportation is a cornerstone of local economies in urban, suburban, and rural communities.
University of Iowa (UI) Parking and Transportation has been "on board" with public transportation for several decades. CAMBUS, the university transit service, has been helping students, faculty, and staff move around campus and supporting opportunity since 1972. Student enrollment, university outreach and research, and UI Hospitals and Clinics continue to expand to provide for the educational and healthcare needs of the future. CAMBUS service has grown in tandem to support those activities providing 3.7 million rides in fiscal year 2018. CAMBUS ridership combined with Iowa City and Coralville Transit equaled 5.8 million rides in the 2018 fiscal year.
UI Parking and Transportation has partnered with Iowa City Transit (ICT) and Coralville Transit (CVT) to offer convenient and affordable transportation for students and staff for several years. A university student bus pass was established in 1996, offering a reduced rate bus pass for ICT. Within six years, a reduced rate bus pass was available to students, faculty, and staff for both ICT and CVT. As of fiscal year 2018, nearly 42% of the rides provided by ICT and CVT were for UPASS (bus pass) members. According to 2018 surveys, 11% of employees and 16% of students use CAMBUS or city transit as their primary mode for traveling to campus.
“Public Transit is a known way of increasing activity levels and improve the health of our community” says Michelle Ribble, Commuter Programs manager. According to a study published in Preventative Medicine, public transit riders take 30% more steps per day than people who rely upon their cars and are nearly 3.5 times more likely to meet the Surgeon General’s physical activity recommendations.
UI Parking and Transportation is encouraging the Hawkeye community to Get on Board on April 25. Show your support by using public transportation. Another way to show support is to share on social media how public transportation positively influences the community using hashtag #GetOnBoard and #Hawkeyes.
