Parking and Transportation Committee

Meeting Minutes


Members Present:                  Ryan Dusil, John Fuller, Kris Halter, Nicole Hodous, Doug Moore, Jason Rantanen, Grant Shirts and Matt Van Hoeck

Staff/Others Present:             Brian McClatchey, Dave Ricketts, Jim Sayre, Greg Schmitt and Carrie Brus

Members/Staff Absent:         Marianne Smith and Debby Zumbach


Meeting started at 3:03pm.  Meeting minutes from last time were approved as submitted by the committee. 

Kinnick Area Traffic Study

• Study originated as a result of these changes on the west campus:

• Move the transit interchange from the south side of Hospital Ramp 2 to the newly constructed West Campus Transportation Center

• New skyway opened

• Iowa River Landing opened in Coralville

• New stoplight at the entrance to Lot 43 at Hawkins Drive, Lot 43 North Drive

• These changes have reduced CAMBUS activity at the interchange of Hawkins and Evashevski Drives

• Study does not factor in pedestrian activity in the skyway

• Please review the study at your convenience and bring any questions back to this committee

Intersection Modifications at Hawkins and Evashevski Drives

• Engaged MPOJC to look at this intersection as a result of the Hospital Ramp 2 project

• The entrance to UIHC has shifted causing some issues with the pedestrian crosswalk

• MPOJC will come back in the spring to modify the crosswalk

• In the meantime, the following modifications have been made:

• Signal timing changes

• No right turn on red coming out of UIHC

• All pedestrian signal when the walk button is engaged

• Lighting and signage improvements

Lighting Upgrade

• Location: Walking from Myrtle Law (Lot 48) to the College of Law

• Will upgrade to LED lighting

Bike Share Proposal

• In the hands of City of Iowa City now

• Trying to craft proposal to allow for future expansion

• Potential to have site locations in place by next fall


• Parking Access and Revenue Control System

• Replacing gates, fee computers, ticket dispensers and card readers

• Nearing the end of the installation phase of this project

• Adding pay-in-lane machines

• North Campus Ramp should be finished tomorrow

• Start work in Lot 21 on Saturday

Hospital Ramp 2

• Opens on Sunday, December 13


• Modification to Hawkeye service

• Hawk-Lot Hospital Route

• 15-minute rounds currently

• Proposal is to change rounds to 20-minute service in the early morning

• Goal is to improve on-time performance and reliability

• Looking at this data on a regular basis via BONGO

Campus Mobility and Safety

• This topic generated some conversation at the last meeting

• Dave has since spoken with a couple of stakeholders on campus

• How to frame this discussion?

• Need to formulate a charge for a smaller group

• What are the ideas to emphasize?

• Awareness

• Education

• Relationship/Co-Mingling

• Interactions vs. Safety

• Structural Needs

• After some discussion, this the charge the group decided on:

• Improving pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular traffic interactions on campus

• Need to move forward will additional conversations now

Campus Tour

• Tour is scheduled for Monday, December 7

Today is the final meeting of the Fall Semester
