Departmental Parking Permit Frequently Asked Questions

Departmental Business Placard questions:

We received a free Departmental Business Placard (DBP) last year; will we still receive a free DBP this year?

One free DBP may be issued per department. For example Parking and Transportation has multiple sub-departments such as CAMBUS, Commuter Programs, Parking Services, Fleet Services and Field Services and is issued one free placard to the Parking and Transportation department. If you have further questions please contact our office at (319) 335-1475 or email parking-office@uiowa.edu.

Where can I use my DBP permit?

Departmental Business Placards are valid in the following locations:

  • Valid in Faculty/Staff reserved lots and UI public parking facilities: Hospital Parking Ramps (1, 2, 3 4), Newton Road Parking Ramp, North Campus Parking Ramp, IMU Parking Ramp, Library Lot, and Dental Visitor Lot.
  • DBP are not valid in the following ramp or surface reserved parking lots including Lot 4, Lot 9-Pomerantz Center Lot, Lot 6-Field House Lot, Lot 17, Family Care Center, Lot 24, Lot 29, Lot 37, Lot-50 Reserved Lot, and Lot 51.

How do I use the Departmental Business Placard?

  • You must display the DBP on the front dash of your vehicle in conjunction with a valid and properly displayed University of Iowa Faculty/Staff ramp or surface reserved parking hangtag.
  • You may not use the DBP with any student permit or the following faculty/staff parking lot permits: Lot 45, Lot 55- Hancher, Lot 65-Finkbine Commuter, Lot 75-Arena, Lot 85-Hawkeye Commuter, IRL- Iowa River Landing, SSB-Hospital Support Services Building or NW-Night Weekend.
  • The DBP allows 3 hours of parking in the approved facilities. Additional time beyond the 3 hour time limit may result in a parking citation.
  • Departmental Business Placards are for use by members of your department for University business only. This placard is not meant to be used for personal convenience or for changing an existing parking lot assignment.
  • Departments that have University vehicles may park in any open surface lot and are not required to display a permit.
  • Departmental business placard use is centrally monitored by the Parking and Transportation Department.  Misuse may result in revocation of the placard.

Please note, if the appropriate Faculty/Staff permit is not displayed in conjunction with the DBP and a citation is written for this reason, only the employee with the Faculty/Staff permit may appeal the citation. Parking citations issued to a Departmental permit may not be appealed and the citation must be paid by the driver. It is the responsibility of the department that holds the permits to know who is using the departmental placards/permits and to communicate this responsibility to their employees.
