Does Your Vehicle Have a Spare Tire?
Do you know if your vehicle has a spare tire? If you think you do, you may be surprised at a very inconvenient time. We’ve come to expect that our vehicles will have at least a “donut” spare if not a full-sized one. However, in recent years the manufacturers have replaced the spare tire in several different types of vehicles with a can of “Fix-a-Flat” and maybe a small compressor. For a tread puncture the can of sealant will probably work just fine. But, if you have damage to the sidewall of the tire, the sealant will probably not work.
For additional information, check out this spare tire article from Automotive Fleet.

Annual AAA Cost of Owning a Vehicle
Every year, AAA publishes a study that examines the cost per mile to operate several different types of vehicles. The study is very comprehensive and examines costs such as insurance, loan interest, fuel, repairs, maintenance, license/registration/taxes and depreciation. It also examines the cost over several different annual mileages because the more you drive, the lower the cost per mile. Here are some examples: at 15,000 miles per year it costs $0.449 per mile to drive a small sedan, $0.581 per mile to drive a medium sedan and $0.71 cents per mile to drive a large sedan. Road Condition Resources
The DOT sponsors a website that helps you find out the condition of the roads you may be driving upon. For information call 511 and specify the roads you will be traveling on or you can go to http://hb.511ia.org . You can also access the highway cameras from this site so you can see the actual road conditions in real time. You can also get an app for your Apple or Android smartphone.
Neighboring State Laws To Be Aware Of
If you don’t travel in neighboring states very often it may be difficult to discover where their driving laws differ from those in Iowa. Here are a couple of laws you need to be aware of:
Minnesota – You can mount a GPS to the windshield, but it must be mounted in the lower portion of the windshield so as not to obstruct the driver’s view. View additional information on mounting a GPS within your vehicle in Minnesota.
Illinois – Use of a cell phone, unless using a hands-free device, is prohibited. View additional information on the use of cell phones in Illinois.
Winter Driving Tips
Although you couldn’t tell from the temperatures the last several days, it is winter. Driving in winter is very different than driving at any other time of year. AAA has some excellent winter and snow driving tips.
Fleet Services Factoid
Generally, 1 inch of rain equals 13 inches of snow. That can vary between 2 and 50 inches of snow depending on conditions. Visit the NSSL website for more information.
