Iowa Road Conditions
The DOT sponsors a website that helps you find out the condition of the roads you may be driving upon. You can call 511 and specify the roads you will be traveling on or you can go to http://hb.511ia.org . You can also access the highway cameras from this site so you can see the actual road conditions in real time. You can also get an app for your Apple or Android smartphone.
Spring Break Vehicle Reservations
We are running low on vehicles for Spring Break. We have pretty good availability on cars, but our Suburbans and mini-vans have already been booked. Our out-sourcing provider is also out of Suburbans and mini-vans for the Spring Break period. If you have a need for one of these types of vehicles let us know right away so we can try to help you.
University’s Driver’s License Review System
If you have staff (student employees included) who drive for your department on a regular basis they should be entered into the University’s Driver’s License Review System. The site is on your Self-Service page, under the Administration tab and in the Systems group. If you don’t have access to this site, your departmental HR person should. That person can also allow others in the department access to the site. If you have questions, please give us a call.
No Handheld Cell Phone Use in Illinois
Beginning January 1, 2014, it is illegal in Illinois to use a handheld cell phone while you are driving. You may use a cell phone if you have a hands-free device like a Bluetooth headset or earpiece, or a speaker phone. This will be a primary offense in Illinois meaning that police do not need any other reason to pull you over other than observing you using a cell phone. Fines start at $75.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Let’s start with the Ugly. The way the weather has been recently has resulted in a lot of dirty University vehicles. It is a dirty mixture of mud, snow, salt and sand. The Bad is that we lost our on-site car wash in the tornado of 2006 and we still have not replaced it. But the Good is that we have an agreement with the Casey’s over by the Studio Arts Building (the old Menards) to provide us with car washes. It is an automatic, drive through style. Stop by our office and we will give you a ticket for a wash. If your vehicle is too big to fit in their wash bay, we have tokens to use the Laser Wash in Coralville. That one is not automatic; you have to use a power wash wand. Every vehicle leased through Fleet Services gets 1 free wash every 30 days. Additional washes during the 30 day period are $5 each.
When getting fuel at either our fuel island or when using the credit card the driver is required to enter an odometer reading. The odometer readings that are entered are critical for several of our functions. We use that reading to see if your vehicle is due for preventative maintenance. We use that reading to see how many miles are driven by each type of vehicle over the month; we use the odometer reading to calculate cost per mile statistics. The bottom line is that number is very important and it needs to be entered accurately every time when getting fuel. Please stress this to your drivers.
Shop Survey Reminder
When service is performed on your vehicle in our shop, we will hang an orange survey card from your rearview mirror. Please take a few minutes to fill out that card for us!! We use that information to see how we’re doing and to make adjustments in our services. You don’t need to put the card in an envelope, just tear at the perforation and put in Campus Mail.
Fleet Services Factoid
Many people forget that when they use a Fleet Services daily rental vehicle there is no additional charge for fuel. The only charges you pay are a daily charge and a mileage charge. We provide a fuel card if you need to get fuel while on the road.
