All Backing Accidents Are Preventable!!

You may have heard that before; what is means is that no one should ever back into something! That being said, backing accidents are one of the most common accidents that occur in University vehicles. Here are some tips to help you avoid a backing accident:

1. Plan ahead and avoid backing whenever possible

2. Do pull through parking whenever possible

3. Continuously check all mirrors when backing

4. Always back slowly, looking and listening for signs of trouble.

5. If you have to back into a parking space, it is better to back in when you arrive than back out when you leave.

6. Before you back, survey the area for obstacles and to ensure you have maneuvering room

7. If available, use a passenger as a guide during backing operations.

Do My Drivers Need Special Licensing?

It may be possible that your driver may need a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or a Chauffers’ License. How can you tell? The first step, is to check your vehicles Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). That number is in the vehicle on a sticker on the driver’s door jam. If the GVWR is more than 26,000 pounds, then the driver will need a CDL. The driver will also need a CDL if the vehicle requires hazardous material placards when carrying certain cargo. Also, if the vehicle is designed to carry 16 or more people, then the driver will need a CDL. Lastly if the vehicle is towing a trailer that has a GVWR of over 10,000 pounds, then the driver will need a CDL.

If a CDL is not required, then the driver may be required to have a Chauffeur’s License. This license is required when the driver is for hire and carrying 15 or less passengers. Another instance where a Chauffeur’s license is required is when driving a vehicle with a GVWR from 16,001 pounds to 26,000 pounds. Lastly a Chauffeur’s License is required when driving a semi-tractor and trailer when for agricultural purposes. Click this link for the CDL manual for specific information.

Update to Our GPS Devices

Most of the vehicles in our rental and lease fleets are capable of using flex-fuel (formerly known as E85). The hard part is finding it somewhere close to where you are. We have just made that a little bit easier if you rent one of our GPS devices. We have added all of the flex-fuel gas stations in the country to the GPS database. When using one of our GPS devices, go to the main menu and tap the "Where To?" link. Then scroll down and tap on the "Extras" link. Then tap on the "Custom POIs" (POIs is Points of Interest). Then you tap on the link for either National or Iowa flex fuel stations. There are many different POIs that you can download for your own GPS such as hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and speed cameras. Just Google "GPS POI Database" to see what is available.
