New Fleet Services Staff!!
We have a full-time new staff member!! Morgan joined Fleet Services on July 25. She previously worked at Letter Perfect in Cedar Rapids. She will be focused on administrative duties, customer service, vehicle title issues, and driver training. Welcome Morgan!!
We will also have two new students starting this fall, Austin (who has already begun training) and Temia who started last week.
When Are Students Allowed to Drive???
The Fleet Safety Program is very specific about when students are allowed to drive University vehicles. They are allowed to drive in four situations:
When they are driving as a part of their job. This means that driving is an actual responsibility of the student’s position. That doesn’t mean a student can drive if he/she is employed for clerical duties and a group of students are going to a conference. Driving to the conference is not part of the student’s job responsibilities.
As a member of a student organization going to a national or regional conference or to a sports club competition. Student drivers must complete defensive driver training.
On a class field trip when the instructor or other staff member is travelling with the group.
When the trip is sponsored by the department and 6 other criteria are met:
The trip is related to a program and the student is registered in that program
The student’s attendance at the event is approved and financially supported by the department head
A primary driver is designated and paid
Vehicle is used for business purposes only
Appropriate form is completed and sent to Risk Management or Fleet Services
All student drivers must take the defensive driving program
Electronic Parking Brakes
Most of our new vehicles, particularly the sedans, have electronic parking brakes. They operate a little differently than traditional parking brakes. They use a button instead of a foot pedal or a lever. To set the parking brake, push the button. To release the parking brake (and this is the tricky part) you need to hold down the brake pedal while you push the release button. If you have questions, or run into problems give our office a call.
Do You Want To End the Lease on an Assigned Vehicle?
It may be possible to end the lease of your vehicle before the end of its life if we can transfer your vehicle to another customer. To discuss this opportunity, I need to hear from you ASAP. I begin ordering new vehicles in November so I need to make any lease changes before new vehicles are ordered. If you wish to discuss your vehicle lease, please call Mike at (319) 384-0564.
We are now open on Saturdays. Our Saturday hours are from 8am until 11am. If your trip begins over the weekend and you wish to delay the start of your charges, the vehicle must be picked up on Saturday morning.
