CAMBUS IS STUDENTS. CAMBUS is, and always has been, student operated. Currently, 170 dedicated UI students operate the on-campus transit service. CAMBUS is designed by and for student employees.
CAMBUS is always looking for friendly people. To qualify you must be a UI student, have a good driving record, and be available for at least two semesters. Experience is not required - we train!
Job applications are available at the West Campus Transportation Center, on all buses, on the CAMBUS website and on the HireaHawk website. Federally mandated drug and alcohol testing is required. We strive to maintain a diverse workforce.
You CAN drive a bus. The skills are quickly obtainable and most find it much less difficult than they ever imagined. Training is one-on-one with a fellow student and at your own pace.
Highlights of working at CAMBUS
Flexible Schedule. The schedule is designated for students. The shifts are short and varied (mornings, daytime, nights and weekends). It's easy to get time off and you are not required to work over breaks.
Convenient Location. CAMBUS is on-campus so it's easy to mix work and classes.
Good Pay and Raises. Starting driver wage is $14.00/hour. In addition, there are pay increases every six months. Also, there is no FICA deduction during academic sessions because it is a University of Iowa student job.
Many Advancement Opportunities. Everyone at CAMBUS starts as a driver, however, there are 33 "support" positions into which people can get promoted. These include dispatchers, trainers, maintenance assistants, clerks, and supervisor positions. A raise and great experience comes with these positions. Top pay at CAMBUS is $16.55.

Student Positions at CAMBUS
Transit Coach Operator (Driver): Operates a transit coach on a fixed-route or special event route. Provides safe, reliable and friendly service in accordance with CAMBUS policies. Obtains and maintains a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Qualifications: must be a UI student, be at least 18 years old, possess a driving record which complies with CAMBUS standards and pass a pre-employment drug screen. Under the direct supervision of the dispatcher while on route and under the general supervision of support staff.
Para-Transit Coach Operator (Bionic Driver): Operates specialized demand-response service for persons with disabilities. Provides safe, reliable and friendly service in accordance with CAMBUS policies. Transports persons, door-to-door, throughout the campus area on a pre-scheduled or call-in basis. Qualifications: must have six months CAMBUS seniority and have a good driving and general work record. "Full-time" Bionic drivers must schedule and drive at least 12 hours of Bionic service per week. "Alternate" Bionic drivers must drive at least one shift per week. Bionic drivers are under the direct supervision of the dispatcher while on route and under the general supervision of support staff.
Dispatcher: Support position: 6 months CAMBUS experience and Bionic training required to be considered for promotion. Monitors and supervises the operation of the fixed-route and para-transit services in order to maintain safety, customer service and timeliness. Responds to requests and schedules rides for para-transit service. Reports employee work rule violations, responds to public inquiries, monitors radio communications, and responds to mechanical and service disruptions. Under the immediate supervision of the Dispatch & Bionic Supervisor.
Transit Operator Trainer: Support position: 6 months CAMBUS experience required to be considered for promotion. Provides new driver training, driver evaluations, driver spot checks, driver re-training, service observations and ridership sampling. Assists in accident investigation and accompanies drivers to obtain their CDL license. Must be willing to work varied schedules including weekends and non-academic sessions. Under the immediate supervision of the Training & Safety Supervisor.
Maintenance Assistant: Support position: 6 months CAMBUS experience required to be considered for promotion. Assists in the maintenance of vehicles by performing or supervising activities related to daily bus fueling, cleaning, inspection and minor maintenance. Supervises nightly activities and employees at the maintenance facility. Responds to in-service vehicle problems. Performs duties to assist the full-time maintenance technicians in safe and effective maintenance of the fleet. Under the immediate supervision of the Maintenance Assistance Supervisor.
Office Assistant: Support position: 6 months CAMBUS experience required to be considered for promotion. Assists in performing duties related to employee forms, files, records, evaluations and time records. Maintains office supplies and provides records and information as requested. Under the immediate supervision of the Personnel Supervisor and Scheduling Supervisor.
Bionic Assistant: Support position: 6 months CAMBUS experience and Bionic training required to be considered for promotion. Assists in performing new driver training, driver evaluations, recording service data and responds to rider and employee inquires. Drives a minimum of two bionic shifts per week. Under the immediate supervision of the Dispatch & Bionic Supervisor.
Training & Safety Assistant: Support position: 6 months CAMBUS experience required to be considered for promotion. Assists in the coordination of the driving training and retraining for all employees as well as assisting in the overall programs of the Training Division, including accident processing, comments/complaints, evaluations, spot-checks, and on-route observations. Under the immediate supervision of the Training & Safety Supervisor.
Supervisor (Dispatch & Bionic, Maintenance, Personnel, Scheduling, Training & Safety): Requires 9 months CAMBUS experience and support experience to be considered for promotion. Manages their specific areas and functions as a member of the management team. Under the immediate supervision of the CAMBUS Operations Supervisor and CAMBUS Manager.
