CAMBUS adding Hawk Lot-Hospital departures for increased reliability beginning Monday, Feb. 24

February 20, 2020

University of Iowa CAMBUS is adding Hawk Lot-Hospital departures weeknights between 6:45 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. An evaluation of service on-time performance identified the need for more reliable service to the Hawkeye Parking Lot from the West Campus Transportation Center (WCTC). Hawk-Lot Hospital service between 6:45 p.m. and 7:50 p.m. will begin Monday, February 24. This change is focused on improving service reliability for University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics staff that rely upon CAMBUS for transportation to commuter parking lots.

The departures are designed to ensure 15-minute service at the West Campus Transportation Center regardless of the reliability/on-time performance of the Hawkeye-Interdorm route. Riders are encouraged to ride the bus that is first available rather than waiting for the Hawk-Lot Hospital route. The solution is considered temporary until the transit study is complete and new routes and/or schedules are considered for the 2020-2021 academic year.

Evaluating Service

CAMBUS continuously evaluates routes and service to ensure it efficiently uses resources to meet the transportation needs of the University of Iowa community. CAMBUS evaluated on-time performance for the Hawkeye Interdorm and Hawkeye-Hospital routes during the Fall 2019 semester. The reliability of the Hawkeye-Interdorm route during this time is below standards and does not meet the need to provide 15-minute service from WCTC to Hawkeye Parking Lot. Several factors, including route length and travel through downtown, are related to the on-time performance of the Hawkeye-Interdorm route.

Transit Study

CAMBUS, understanding its critical role in supporting healthcare staff, has asked the Iowa City Area Transit Study consultant to evaluate service to the Hawkeye Campus. Consultant Nelson/Nygaard after evaluating data and community feedback has made proposed changes for service. Riders are asked to provide feedback on three proposed scenarios via a survey tool. The proposed scenarios are not final and are dependent upon CAMBUS and its campus partners thoroughly reviewing feasibility of final recommendations.
