University of Iowa’s CAMBUS recognizes Nathan Sears as Cambus Driver of the Year, 2020. Transit service providers across Iowa annually each nominate an employee to be honored by the Iowa Public Transit Association (IPTA) for their commitment to providing safe and friendly service.
On average, 160 student-employees operate transit services across the University of Iowa campus. Student drivers play a critical role in ensuring campus access and mobility to students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Their responsibilities begin with driving but can grow to include training, dispatching, assisting with maintenance, and supervising.
Sears is an Art major and has worked with CAMBUS since May of 2016. He provides a positive influence within the workplace and has proven himself to be an exemplary employee and co-worker. “Sears was chosen because of his reliability, consistency, and his calm and friendly demeanor,” noted the selection team.
“Driving a bus bring you face to face with people from all walks of life - whether it be construction workers, students, professors, the homeless, and many others,” replied Sears. “The more interactions I had [while driving], the better I became at connecting with anyone and everyone, a vital skill for any career” explained Sears.
Sears’ hard work and commitment to CAMBUS’ work environment has stood out. Sears is well known at CAMBUS for his model safety record and stepping up to take shifts during academic breaks and finals weeks.
“There are a lot of great people that drive for CAMBUS and I know deciding Driver of the Year had to be difficult. I feel honored that I was the one who was chosen in the end. It was completely unexpected,” says Sears.
