University of Iowa hosts new students for summer orientation, heavy traffic and parking congestion possible
June 4, 2019
Every summer, the University of Iowa welcomes thousands of incoming Hawkeyes to campus over the course of a few months to take part in orientations. With an influx of students and their families arriving to campus at once, traffic can become congested throughout campus. Public parking, specifically the IMU Parking Ramp and the North Campus Parking Ramp, can also fill quickly on the East Campus. Numbers of students on campus will range from 200 – 800 depending upon the orientation schedule.
Iowa Parking and Transportation, Iowa Orientation Services, and the City of Iowa City work closely to assure that the flow of traffic on campus runs as smoothly as possible throughout the busy orientation schedule. June is the busiest month for orientation with over a dozen orientations hosted between June 3 and the June 28.
Because orientation is centered in the IMU, the IMU Parking Ramp is the first to reach capacity, followed next by the North Campus Parking Ramp, and then city parking ramps. Students and their families are advised by orientation staff where to parking prior to arriving on campus.
East Campus parking tends to experience the most congestion during overlapping two-day orientation programs. The overlapping two-day orientation are on the following dates:
- Tuesday, June 4
- Tuesday, June 11
- Wednesday, June 12
- Wednesday, June 19
- Thursday, June 20
- Thursday, June 27
