University of Iowa Parking and Transportation invests in EV charging stations at three parking ramps

March 6, 2020

EV charging stations will be available in three University of Iowa parking facilities beginning March 9, 2020.  The electric charging stations are for public use – including students, faculty, and staff – and are located in the North Campus Parking Ramp, Newton Road Parking Ramp, and Hospital Parking Ramp 3. There will be no direct cost for charging an electric vehicle in university parking facilities. Customers will be required to pay applicable hourly parking fees and charging sessions will be limited to four hours.

Parking and Transportation is committed to supporting and enabling travel to campus through environmentally friendly modes including public transportation, carpooling, and bicycling. Offering electric vehicle charging amenities on campus builds upon the university’s history of supporting a variety of transportation modes and amenities. Each facility will begin with two charging stations. Stations installed can be expanded at these sites in response to demand.

The charging stations installed are level 2 ChargePoint commercial charging stations. ChargePoint is the largest EV charging network in North America and allows users to find stations and charge through a single application. Both the City of Iowa City and Parking and Transportation selected ChargePoint to provide the technology and hardware to offer EV charging. Collaboration with the city is an important consideration and helps visitors to campus seamlessly connect to university and city public parking services.

“Inquiries about electrical vehicle charging locations on campus have increased in recent years,” says Erin Shane, Parking and Transportation associate director.  “Our team will be watching use and learning from the user activity to help us match demand or consider enforcement needs.”
