Night and Weekend Parking for Faculty and Staff
Parking and Transportation offers an extensive range of Night and Weekend parking options for University of Iowa faculty and staff who need to park on campus after regular business hours. Many sites are available to employees who hold one of many qualifying UI permits and several free options that do not require any permit or pass.
Index of topics discussed below:
- Employee Permit and Pass Options for Night and Weekend parking
- Free Night and Weekend parking options
- Restricted Facilities
- Permits that provide NW privileges
Night and weekend parking privileges are provided through several UI parking permits, including Ramp Reserved, Surface Reserved A, Surface Reserved B, Commuter, the NW permit (Night and Weekend only) and Carpool Stickers. These parking privileges, known as NW, are currently offered in most UI cashiered facilities and two faculty/staff-only lots. The details of use may be different for each facility and restrictions apply for patient parking, special events and maintenance or construction activities.
NW in UI Cashiered Facilities:
The NW privilege provides access at no extra charge to the following UI cashiered facilities between 4:30 pm and 8:30 am M-F, and all weekend long. If you forget your parking access card you will be required to pay the full cashiered amount. Exiting through a cashier without your card or a transaction ticket will result in paying the applicable fees and is non-refundable up to the a daily maximum charge.

Procedures for NW use In UI cashiered facilities:
- When entering an approved UI cashiered facility, pull to a stop with the driver’s side window in line with the card reader. Present the card to the face of the reader, holding it parallel to, and no more than three inches from, the target decal on the reader surface. Hold it steady for one second. Do not wave or flash the card at the reader.
- The time and location of the entry will be noted. Use the same procedure to exit. Calculations for fees will be based on these entry and exit times.
- To utilize NW privileges, always use the card to enter or exit a UI cashiered facility.
- Do not pull a transaction ticket upon entry and attempt to use the card when exiting. This will result in a daily maximum charge for every incident.
- Use of the card for consecutive entries without a paired exit (or consecutive exits without a paired entry) is prohibited and may result in a daily maximum charge for each incident.
- Use the card to exit when the gates are up late at night. Simply stop, present the card to the reader. Your exiting time is noted even though the gate may already be up.
- Never share, transfer or pass-back a parking access card. Each incidence will result in a daily maximum charge and is considered theft and may be prosecuted.
NW Restrictions in UI Cashiered Parking Facilities:
Patient Facility Restrictions:
In Hospital Parking Ramps 1, 2, 4, and the Family Care Center parking lot, most parking is reserved for patients during weekday hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm M-F). Any faculty/staff parking in these facilities during these hours without an appropriate permit, including those using NW privileges, will be subject to a citation and fine. In addition to the fine, any hourly charges will apply. NW privileges are not valid in the Family Care Center parking lot at any time.
Student Facility Restrictions:
In the Library Lot, much of the parking is reserved for Registered Student Vehicles and Lot 3 permits during weekday hours (7:30am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday). Any faculty/staff parking in these facilities during these hours without an appropriate permit, including those using NW privileges, will be subject to a citation and fine. In addition to the fine, any hourly charges will apply.
Employee Facility Restrictions:
In Lot 13, the entire lot is reserved for Lot 13 permit-holders during business hours (7:30am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday). Any faculty/staff parking in these facilities during these hours without an appropriate permit, including those using NW privileges, will be subject to a citation and fine. In addition to the fine, any hourly charges will apply.
Faculty/Staff as patients:
If you are a faculty or staff member using Hospital Ramps 1, 2 and 4 as a patient during weekday hours, please take a transaction ticket from the machine when entering the facility. Before leaving the hospital obtain a UIHC patient parking pass, then present the cashiers ticket and the pass to the parking cashier when exiting. If you are parking in the Family Care Center lot make sure you obtain a Family Care Center patient pass prior to exiting.
The regular UIHC patient pass, or the FCC pass, validates the cashiers ticket, ensuring that the lower patient rate will be applied and it can also cancel certain parking citations. To accomplish this, submit the parking transaction ticket, the pass and citation, if you received one, to the cashier when exiting.
Anyone entering Hospital Ramps 1, 2 and 4 between 5:00 am and 9:00 am, Monday-Friday, is subject to the graduated hourly rate (higher than the patient and standard hourly rates after the first three hours). The pass, when used with the cashiers ticket, ensures that the patient parking rate is applied.
Avoid the Citation:
Employees coming to UIHC for outpatient clinic appointments can avoid getting a parking citation by pre-printing a Parking Citation Waiver from their MyChart account, up to seven days prior to their appointment, and prominently displaying it upon the dashboard of their car when parked in a Hospital Ramp on the day of the appointment. MyChart can be accessed at https://mychart.uihealthcare.org/.
Faculty/Staff who park as patients on weekdays should always take a cashiers ticket when visiting. Do not use the parking access card. The patient hourly rate cannot be reduced to the patient rate when the access card is used for entry and exit.
For those who accidentally use their NW card access privileges to visit the UIHC as a patient and who receive a parking citation for parking in Hospital Parking Ramps 1, 2, and 4 and the FCC Lot during those appointments can have parking citations canceled by submitting the citation along with the patient parking pass to the cashier upon exit. This will require you to use the card to raise the gate in an exit lane where a cashier is present. After the gate is raised, pull forward and submit the citation and the orange information sheet (issued with the citation) to the cashier. The Parking Services office, in conjunction with the UIHC will review the citation to determine whether or not it should be canceled.
If no cashier is present, or if you exit via an automated lane, you can submit the citation and information sheet to the Parking Services office via campus or US Mail.
The patient hourly rate cannot be reduced to the patient rate when the access card is used for entry and exit.
E-mail any questions to the Parking Office.
NW Hourly Charges in UI cashiered facilities:
If you enter and exit these facilities during designated NW hours, with an appropriate permit and follow the procedures, there will be no hourly charges. If you enter before 4:30 pm and/or exit after 8:30 am on weekdays, or are parked during those hours, you will be charged at the appropriate rate for each hour outside NW rules. Any fraction of an hour will result in a full hour of charges (61 minutes = 2 hour parking charge). Charges for early entry are calculated separately from late exiting. The charge for a lost ticket is the daily maximum.
There is no charge when the recorded exit time is no more than thirty (30) minutes later than the entry time.
Web Review of NW use and charges:
Each NW card-holder has the ability to view a summary of their monthly activity and any charges on a secure web site located within the UI Employee Self Service portal under My Parking. All charges will be deducted from the faculty or staff member’s paycheck on a monthly basis.
NW in Non-cashiered or permit-only facilities:
NW privileges provide free off-hours access to the following faculty/staff facilities between 4:30 pm – 7:30 am M-F and from 4:30 pm Friday through 7:30 am Monday at no extra charge. Note the difference in required morning exit times from the cashiered facilities (7:30 am versus 8:30 am for cashiered facilities). Always display the appropriate permit when using NW privileges.
