What is Bongo?

Bongo is a GPS-based, real-time passenger information system that allows riders to find current bus locations as well as predictions for upcoming bus arrivals for Iowa City, Coralville and University of Iowa CAMBUS.  Remember to allow plenty of time to reach your stop before the bus arrives.

How do I use Bongo?

Call the Bongo telephone number, (319) 471-4155. When prompted, enter your bus stop number to hear a prediction of your bus arrival time.

Text "bongo [stop #]" to 41411. You will receive a text message with a predicted number of minutes until your bus arrives.

Access the Bongo website, www.ebongo.org.  Access the map and see the location of the buses in real time. Click on bus stops for arrival predictions and service information.

How can I create an alert?

Bongo can send an alert to your mobile phone or computer when your bus is a specified number of minutes away.

To create a text alert for your mobile phone, text "bongo [stop#]" to 41411.  Once you receive an arrival prediction, reply to the message with the number of minutes of notice (1-30) you want before your bus arrives.

How does Bongo work?

Bongo utilizes GPS technology and computer modeling to track vehicles on their routes and predict arrival times.  Each vehicle is equipped with a GPS tracking system that reports latitude and longitude to a satellite every 15 seconds.

The satellite then transfers the information to a data center which locates the bus on a map and then, using historical averages, it calculates the predicted arrival times for every stop on the route.
