CAMBUS has implemented a new hiring incentive program in an effort to increase the number of student drivers and encourage them to quickly move through the multi-step hiring process. As of Dec. 20, 2021, all newly hired CAMBUS student staff will receive a total of $400 in two $200 installments after meeting two milestones in the hiring process.
CAMBUS is also providing a retention incentive payment of $100 to current student staff. The hiring and retention incentives are part of a University of Iowa pilot program to improve recruitment and retention of student employees who provide essential services to campus.
“If you have ever considered working for CAMBUS, now is the time to apply,” says Mia Brunelli, CAMBUS operations manager. “We offer competitive pay and flexible scheduling that can accommodate your classes and other academic priorities.”
New student employees obtain a commercial driver’s license permit (CDLP) and complete pre-employment steps and the required training program at their own pace. The program will incentivize new employees to move through the process more quickly.
Milestone 1: Obtain CDL permit and attend orientation
New employees should immediately schedule an appointment with the Department of Transportation (DOT) for a CDL permit test. The test is usually scheduled within two to three weeks, and during that wait time new employees should attend a CAMBUS orientation session. New employees will receive the first $200 incentive upon completion of orientation and receiving their CDL permit.
Milestone 2: Pass the CAMBUS training program
New employees will receive the second $200 incentive after completing driving training and passing the final CAMBUS driving skills exam.
As part of the training program, all CAMBUS student employees obtain their Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and with the airbrakes restriction removed.
