University of Iowa Parking and Transportation is implementing a license plate recognition (LPR) system by summer 2021 that will allow a vehicle license plate to also be used as the university parking permit. After this change, most permit holders will no longer need a hang tag or sticker to park in their permitted location. Virtual permits and the use of license plate recognition increases flexibility for permit holders and removes the need to return or pick-up a permit.

The change to LPR and virtual permits makes the permit process more sustainable by removing waste created by using physical permits. The change is also anticipated to increase the speed of parking-waitlist offers and increase efficiencies in parking system operations.

At this time, Parking and Transportation staff are testing the equipment and technology to ensure a smooth change. No changes are needed from permit holders at this time. Permit holders should continue to clearly display their parking permit until notified otherwise. Complete details will be provided to campus and permit holders later in the spring semester.
