CAMBUS in response to staff shortage has increased the hiring incentive bonus to $1,000 for newly hired student employees. The incentive is provided in three installments after meeting milestones in the hiring process. The starting wage for student staff has also been increased to $17.50/hour with raises every 6 months.

Disruptions due to the pandemic and wait times for CDL testing have caused on-going staffing shortages at CAMBUS. The initial hiring incentive program was implemented in December 2021 in an effort to increase student drivers and encourage new hires to quickly move through the multi-step hiring process.
Program details
New student employees obtain a commercial driver’s license permit (CDLP) and complete pre-employment steps and the required training program at their own pace. The program will incentivize new employees to move through the process more quickly. In total, $1,000 will be provided across three installments during the hiring process.
Milestone 1: Complete first training session
New employees will receive a $300 incentive payment upon completing all pre-employment steps (including obtaining a CDL permit), attending orientation, and completing their first training session.
Milestone 2: Pass the CAMBUS training program
New employees will receive a $300 incentive after completing driving training and passing the final CAMBUS driving skills exam.
Milestone 3: Complete final drive and work 50 hours
New employees will receive a $400 incentive after working 50 hours after passing the training program.
Licensing
As part of the training program, all CAMBUS student employees obtain their Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and with the airbrakes restriction removed.
