University of Iowa’s CAMBUS recognizes Maggie Greer as the 2026 Support Person of the Year. The award was established by Cambus in 2019 to recognize the student support staff who serve in behind-the-scenes and leadership roles that keep the transit system operating smoothly.

Greer joined Cambus as a bus operator in October 2023 and was promoted to dispatcher in September 2024. In her role as dispatcher, she helps maintain safe, reliable, and on-time transit service by supervising on-duty drivers and responding to disruptions such as event traffic, road closures, and severe weather. She also answers public phone calls and schedules rides for the Bionic Bus paratransit service. Student dispatchers are the first point of contact for drivers and the public when questions or service issues arise.

In their selection of Greer, the Cambus supervisor and management team noted her consistent work on 4 a.m. dispatch opening shifts. Greer is highly reliable in getting services started on time and troubleshooting any issues so that riders have a dependable morning commute. Student staff frequently cite Greer as a role model they look up to for her friendly attitude and problem-solving skills.

As an undergraduate student pursuing degrees in Psychology and Counseling and Behavioral Health Services, Greer says communication is key for her in the workplace. "I do have to make sacrifices to balance work and school,” she says, “I find that communication with my supervisors and other dispatchers can help alleviate those pressures.”

Greer encourages incoming applicants to join the Cambus team for the growth opportunities it provides. She notes that “sometimes, this job requires that I work through difficult situations, and the work I have done at Cambus has taught me problem solving in a unique way.”

About the Support Person of the Year award

To complement the annual Driver of the Year award, CAMBUS began selecting a Support Person of the Year in 2019. To be eligible for the award, employees in support positions must meet the same criteria as the Driver of the Year award, plus have served in a support role for the past year.

Criteria for award eligibility includes a clean work record, no attendance violations, and an excellent safety record. The Cambus management and student supervisor team evaluate the list of eligible candidates to select an overall award winner. The Cambus team looks at factors such as previous recognitions received throughout the year, feedback from other staff, and their contributions to creating an inclusive and positive workplace experience.
