Most faculty and staff parking facilities are assigned to capacity. The rate at which new assignments can be made is dependent upon the rate at which current assignments are canceled; ie: someone has to cancel their permit in order for a space to become available for a new assignment. Since demand exceeds the capacity of most parking facilities, Parking and Transportation maintains waiting lists for each facility. Most assignments are made from these waiting lists.

Receiving a Parking Waitlist offer

When you receive a waitlist offer, you will get an email sent to your UI email address. You can also check in on the waitlist website and see if you have any current offers. You will have one week to accept or decline the offer. If you decline an offer or allow one to expire, you are removed from that wait list and cannot get back on for 30 days. Once back on the list, you will still be ranked by seniority.

Waitlist eligibility and setup

University of Iowa faculty and staff employed 50% time or more in a permanent position are eligible for the Parking Waitlist.  For more detail about eligibility, visit the Faculty and Staff Permit Parking Assignment Policy.

Waiting lists for individual parking facilities are organized according to two factors. First, all names on the list are divided into the two categories of either Faculty or Staff. Second, each of those categories is organized according to your University Human Resouces seniority date from oldest to newest. The oldest dates receive the highest priority.

How the waitlist works

Employees are ranked by seniority on each list. Waitlist seniority is based on the earliest date of continuous employment in a permanent half-time or greater job extending to the present. Each parking lot maintains three lists: Faculty, Merit/Professional, and Accessible(ADA). Each of these lists is organized by waitlist seniority date. All Accessible Waitlist entries in a lot are offered first (in seniority order), then offers alternate between the top entry on the Faculty and Merit/Professional lists.

Offers are made whenever there is a vacancy in a given lot. Many parking facilities are assigned to capacity and permit turnover defines when new assignments are made. Since demand exceeds capacity of many parking facilities, Parking and Transportation maintains waiting lists for each facility.

Since each list is organized according to University of Iowa employment start date, the relative positions of each individual on a list may change over time. Individuals with older employment dates may apply later and move ahead of individuals already on the list. To qualify for an assignment made within a particular month, employees must have their name on the list by the end of the prior month.

Assignments

Assignments are made to each facility on an alternating basis from the separate lists of faculty and staff. If there are two assignments to make, one will come from the top of each list. If ten assignments are to be made, then five will come from each list. If the last assignment made to a facility came from the faculty list, then the next assignment will come from the staff list.
