Annual contact and MFK validation for the new FY

An automated message will be generated on July 1 by the Assigned Vehicle Portal asking Admin Contacts (and Delegates) to review the contact names and MFKs for the new fiscal year. If they are accurate, please confirm them, and if not, update the contact name and MFK accordingly.

Is there an optimum speed for AC for efficiency purposes?

Opening the windows while driving increases drag and slows the car down therefore the vehicle needs more fuel to run. However, running the A/C also puts an extra load on the engine requiring more fuel to run. So, when is it best to turn on the AC to maximize efficiency? A good rule of thumb is to keep the windows down while on city streets, then use the air conditioning when you hit the highway. Read the article from Slate.com for a more detailed explanation.

Advanced gas saving tips

Fueleconomy.gov has some useful tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your next tank of gas. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Keep tires at the recommended pressure.  Under-inflation increases friction and reduces MPG
  • Use cruise control when you’re on the highway. This will help you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas
  • Remove excess weight from your vehicle; unnecessary tools, etc., or the spare tire if you are feeling lucky
  • Drive more sensibly and observe the speed limit, you can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 50 mph is like paying an additional $0.35 per gallon for gas
  • Plan and combine trips, trip planning can reduce the amount of time you drive with a cold engine and also reduce the distance you travel

Mandatory ethanol use in state vehicles

While we are on the subject of WEX cards now would be a good time to remind those folks with E-85 vehicles that when fueling off campus you have to use E-85 if it is available. If E-85 is not available choose the fuel type with the highest ethanol content.

Chevrolet 4-Wheel drive selection

For those of you that are assigned Chevrolet vehicles with 4-wheel drive, the transaxle selector knob should generally be positioned in the 2-wheel high or “2H” position.

  • Select “Auto” when the pavement is wet with snow or rain.
  • Choose 4-wheel high or “4H” when the pavement is covered with snow, or you are on gravel roads.

Odometer readings

When getting fuel at our fuel island or when using the credit card, the drivers is required to enter an odometer reading. These odometer readings are critical for several of our functions. We use that reading to see if your vehicle is due for preventative maintenance. We use that reading to see how many miles are driven by each type of vehicle over the month; we use the odometer reading to calculate cost per mile statistics. The bottom line is that number is very important and it needs to be entered accurately when getting fuel. Please stress this to your drivers.

Fleet Factoid

You may have heard about how microchip shortages are affecting the vehicle production supply chain, but did you ever wonder how many microchips it takes to make a modern vehicle?  The average gas-powered vehicle has about 1,000 chips, and electric vehicles can have more than double that number. Read more about microchip shortages.
