On occasion employees are called back to work at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. For your convenience, we’ve summarized the options available to employees if called back.
To preserve space for both patients and emergent call back parking, employees should avoid using parking ramps whenever possible, and instead park in their assigned parking lot. Below are a few scenarios and their recommended parking choice.
Emergent call back
Employees should always use their best judgment for parking if you are called back. If it is a patient care emergency and parking in your normal location will impact your ability to respond, please park in a ramp. You may be issued a citation, but it can be appealed and cancelled if you’ve been called back for a patient care emergency.
When can employees park in ramps?
Yes, park in ramp:
Emergent call back (if you receive a citation, you can easily appeal online)
Attending your appointment or visiting a loved one (only for the duration of appointment)
No, use permit lot:
Regular shift or non-emergent overtime
Non-patient related business (continuing ed., class, interview)
Public parking is full in Field House or HPR3
Maybe, consider options:
Volunteering, donating blood, research studies, pharmacy, etc. - consider parking in your assigned parking lot or a parking ramp.
If you receive a citation, you may need to submit verification form/appeal
Night Weekend Privileges
Employees who have a university parking permit and are called back to work after hours may use Night and Weekend privileges to park in university parking facilities at no-cost Monday through Friday 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 a.m. and all weekend long. Employees must use their issued parking access card to enter and exit the parking facility. Parking outside those hours is billed at the published hourly rate.
Tip: If you anticipate you’ll stay past 8:30 a.m., it is best to use Hospital Parking Ramp 3 or Newton Road Ramp to avoid a citation for parking during patient hours.
The night and weekend privileges detailed above are also available for purchase as a parking permit, the Night Weekend (NW) Permit. If you have a U-PASS, the NW Parking Permit still allows you to be eligible for the discounted U-PASS.

Employees who do not have a university parking permit and are called back to UI Hospitals & Clinics during evening or weekend hours may choose from a couple options.
Ungated Parking Lots
The parking lot surrounding Kinnick Stadium – Parking Lot 43 – is available to the public between 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. Monday through Friday and all weekend long, except during athletic events. Failure to remove your vehicle before 7:30 a.m. on a weekday may result in a parking citation.
Hourly Parking
Between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. employees who do not have parking permit may park in Hospital Parking Ramps 1, 2, 3, 4, or Newton Road Parking Ramp and pay the hourly parking rate.
Reminder: Hospital Parking Ramps 1, 2, and 4 are reserved for patients and visitors between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Employees are not permitted to use the parking facilities during those hours unless you have an appointment or are accompanying someone to an appointment. Therefore, you should use Hospital Parking Ramp 3 and Newton Road Parking Ramp to avoid receiving a parking citation if there is a chance you may stay beyond 8:30 a.m. on a weekday.
