For the purposes of University parking policy, motorcycles, motor scooters and mopeds are categorized and referred to as motorcycles. All motorcycles must park in designated motorcycle parking areas. Designated motorcycle parking can be found on the campus Parking Map.
Permits are required to park motorcycles on campus. Physical permits must be displayed on the rear of the motorcycle at all times.
Employee Motorcycle Permits
Employees may register up to three (3) vehicles on a parking permit, including motorcycles. There is no extra motorcycle permit fee for employees who have an existing parking permit. Employees who add a motorcycle license plate as one their three vehicles in their parking account will still need to secure a physical motorcycle permit from our office. Employees who maintain just a motorcycle permit will pay the current permit fee.
Permit rates can be found on the rates page. Purchasing a motorcycle permit or adding a motorcycle to an existing permit can be accomplished through the Parking Portal. Employees must pick up their physical permit from our office or choose their permit to be mailed.
Student Motorcycle Permits
Students can combine a motorcycle permit with any other student vehicle permit. Separate fees for permit types will apply. Permit rates can be found on the rates page. Information about payment options for student permits can be found on the Student Parking Page.
Students can purchase a motorcycle permit in the Parking Portal. Students must pick up their physical permit from our office or choose their permit to be mailed.
Motorcycle Parking on Campus
All motorcycles must park in designated motorcycle parking areas and display a physical permit at all times. Designated motorcycle parking can be found on the campus Parking Map.
Motorcycle lots are maintained by sweeping and striping. Most motorcycle lot use is seasonal and during winter snow months, motorcycle lots may not be plowed, salted, or sanded. Contact Parking Dispatch for a motorcycle parking lot maintenance issue.
All motorcycle parking regulations can be found in the Parking and Transportation Regulations. A few motorcycle parking regulations to be aware of:
- Motorcycles are prohibited from parking in all automobile parking spaces including meters or mobile payment zones, ADA (handicap) aisles and walkways.
- Motorcycles may not park in any other area, including the University's fire lanes, loading zones, construction areas, driveways, lawns, sidewalks, automobile parking spaces or bicycle racks.
- Motorcycles must be parked within lines of the motorcycle parking lot. If the motorcycle stalls are full, the permit holder must go to another motorcycle lot with available space.
- Motorcycles may not be locked to or parked at utility poles, trees, bollards, railings, signposts, meter posts, or fences.
Iowa City Motorcycle Parking
The City of Iowa City also provides motorcycle parking in designated areas and requires its own permit. University permits are not valid in Iowa City lots and vice versa. More information for Iowa City motorcycle parking can be found on their webpage.
