Starting January of 2024, UI Parking and Transportation will charge a rate of $0.16 per kWh for the use of public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations on campus. Payments will be made through the ChargePoint app. 

This decision is in response to the State of Iowa passing the Electric Fuel Excise Tax, which taxes electricity used to charge EVs. The new rate is intended to help recover the costs associated with providing electric charging.  

Customers will continue to pay the applicable parking fees to access charging stations. Parking fees are charged to ensure UI parking facilities are well maintained and long-lasting. 

Parking and Transportation currently provides 24 charging stations in six locations for “top-off” charging. To learn more about EV charging stations on campus, visit the EV charging webpage.
