Overview

There are many projects under way that are improving our campus for the future. The next 10 years of facilities construction and upgrades will cause some disruptions for students, faculty, staff, patients, and visitors. We appreciate your flexibility. You can stay up to date on changes to parking and roadways with the information and links on this page.

Fall 2023 update

Since last spring, some construction projects have been finished that have either created or restored parking space on campus. The quick progress to expand parking where possible has added 495 new spaces on the West Campus to help improve parking for faculty, staff, and students. The new spaces have been prioritized for faculty and staff displaced by construction and allows parking operations to resume more normal operations.

The utility project near the Dental Science Building has been completed. All Lot 40 permit holders reassigned were moved back July 31, 2023, and as space becomes available offers are being made from the parking waitlist.

Open land immediately west of Parking Lot 48 allowed the lot to be expanded and be offered an option to displaced permit holders. The project was completed ahead of scheduled. Permit holders who selected this option were able to begin parking here on Aug. 14, 2023.

Parking Lot 53 was constructed to help reduce the impacts to permit holders reassigned due to the Hawkeye Ramp Project and offset the loss of parking near UI Hospitals & Clinics. Previously, the Melrose Court location was only used for Hawkeye Football games as the lot was not paved.

The parking wait list is not available for this location yet. Offers are being made to reassigned permit holders based upon seniority.

Parking Lot 73 has been used intermittently since the closure of the University Club. Open land immediately north of the parking lot allowed it to be expanded and be offered an option to displaced permit holders.

Hawkeye Parking Ramp

Construction on the Hawkeye Parking Ramp began June 2023 as part of the university 10-year master plan. Upon completion, the Hawkeye Parking Ramp is anticipated to offer about 900 parking spaces that will serve parking needs primarily for university faculty and staff. The new parking structure will allow for the later demolition of Hospital Parking Ramp 1, which sits in the path of the new patient tower.

Parking impacts of construction projects

Construction projects impacting parking lots have required changes to parking assignments throughout the west campus. Most reassignments began the end of May 2023 when the Hawkeye Ramp project and the Health Sciences Academic Building began construction. Permit holders were reassigned based upon seniority to nearby parking. Faculty and staff reassigned can find resources below.

A new state-of-the-art inpatient tower will be built on the footprint of three existing structures: Hospital Parking Ramp 1, the water tower, and the Wendell Johnson Speech and Hearing Center. To make way this project and other projects of the master plan, parking on the west campus has been reduced. Learn more about which parking lots have been impacted by construction.
